About the Project
Trees Harp and Wind Harps, too is a collection of instruments for listening, mediation and performance commissioned by the Office of Arts and Culture as part of the Experiments in Public Art program. These objects were made in response to and mostly of wood from ash trees felled in the city’s Central Park due to infestation by the Emerald Ash Borer.
While the components of these instruments are recognized from traditional musical instruments, these objects will not create the same kind of song. The accompanying performance with these instruments takes cue from the living score created by environmental collaborators: the running creek, chirping birds, wind and surrounding treescape. Much like the surrounding landscape, these instruments are living and changing.
About the Artist
Katie Shlon is an interdisciplinary artist and musician investigating the complex relationships between people, the land, and architecture. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015 and is currently based in Baltimore, MD.
